What to run on an 8.8-inch strip display: the software that actually fits

Windows 10 and 11 · Last updated 6 October 2026

The panel arrived, Windows detected it, and now it is showing the top four centimetres of a browser. This is the list of software that treats 1920×480 as a shape rather than a mistake.

The rule that sorts everything

Anything designed for a normal window will be cropped, not shrunk. A strip is a quarter the height of a 1080p monitor, so the only things that fit are programs that were drawn for it, or that can be told to be short and wide. Everything below is one of those two.

For hardware monitoring

The most common use, and the best fit: a temperature is three characters and a colour.

Whatever you pick: CPU temperature on Windows needs administrator rights. If a program shows GPU but not CPU, that is why. More on which readings deserve the space.

For music

A strip is the ideal now-playing display: one line of title, one of artist, artwork on the left, a progress bar along the bottom.

For chat and notifications

Discord and WhatsApp both assume a tall window, so the native apps are out. What works is a feed: the last few messages, who is calling, the Windows notification centre on one line. TinyScreen does this with WhatsApp (via the desktop app's notifications), Discord calls with the caller's avatar, and the Windows notification stream.

For a clock, calendar and weather

The classic bedside use. Any of the dashboard programs above do it; so does a browser pointed at a full-screen clock page, with the caveat that browsers love to steal focus. A dashboard that blocks the pointer and stays put is calmer.

For a terminal or logs

Windows Terminal at 100% scaling gives you about twelve readable lines. Set the profile's starting size to 200 columns × 12 rows and tell it to open on the strip. It genuinely works for a tail of a log.

For video and wallpapers

A 4:1 panel is a very good place for a looping landscape. Wallpaper Engine (Steam, cheap) has 1920×480 items in its Workshop. TinyScreen ships 30 live wallpapers drawn for the shape, with the readings painted on top. Static 1920×480 images are easy to find; just crop any ultrawide photo to 4:1.

What does not work, so you stop trying

ProgramWhy
Discord, Slack, Telegram appsMinimum window height is taller than the screen
A browser with a normal pageYou get the address bar and a headline
GamesNothing renders a 4:1 field of view sensibly
Task ManagerCropped; use a dashboard's process widget instead

Before you install anything

  1. Set the strip to its native 1920×480 and 100% scaling.
  2. Make it the non-primary display so new windows open elsewhere.
  3. Place it in Display settings where it physically sits.

The full checklist, including the "it goes black after sleep" fix, is in Setting up an 8.8-inch strip display on Windows.

TinyScreen is a dashboard built for exactly this shape of screen — hardware readings, what is playing, incoming messages, and Claude Code usage, laid out for 1920×480 rather than squeezed into it. Windows 10 and 11, any strip panel Windows shows as a display.
